Halal in Amsterdam

Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around Monday 8 February and end around 10 March, with Eid al-Fitr around Thursday 11 March. The exact dates depend on the moon sighting, and Amsterdam's communities do not always start on the same day, so follow the mosque you plan to pray at.

Short fasts in a winter Ramadan

In 2027 Ramadan falls in late winter, so the fasts are short: roughly 11½ hours in early February, rising to about 13½ hours by early March. Iftar moves from around 17:50 to around 18:40. Days are cold and often wet, so plan indoor sightseeing in the afternoon and save your energy for the evening.

Where to break your fast

Several mosques hold community iftars, including the Westermoskee Ayasofya and the Blauwe Moskee; seats go quickly in the last ten nights, so ask ahead. After Maghrib the Turkish and Moroccan streets come alive: Kinkerstraat and Jan Evertsenstraat in West, Javastraat in Oost and the shopping streets of Nieuw-West. Bakeries sell Ramadan bread and sweets, and many halal restaurants offer an iftar menu. See our restaurant guide.

Tarawih

Most mosques pray tarawih every night. The Fatih Mosque is the easiest for visitors staying in the centre; the Westermoskee is the grandest. Arrive early, especially at weekends and in the last ten nights.

Eid al-Fitr

Eid prayer is held early in the morning; large mosques often hold more than one prayer. Eid is not a public holiday in the Netherlands, so museums and shops are open as usual, which makes it an easy day for a family outing after prayer.

Practical tips

  • Suhoor: hotel breakfasts start too late. Ask for a breakfast box the night before, or choose an apartment hotel with a kitchen.
  • Groceries: dates, laban and Ramadan products are easy to find at Turkish and Moroccan supermarkets in West and Oost.
  • Prayer times: use your mosque's timetable on Mawaqit.
